The oldest major tennis championship in existence, Wimbledon is one of the most popular London events and the third Grand Slam event played each year, following the Australian and French Opens but preceding the U.S. Open. Hosted every year at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (AELTC), the tournament has long possessed a considerable draw for tennis fans from all over the world, bringing over 30,000 spectators to London every year, many of whom are willing to queue up outside the Club gates in hopes of getting last-minute tickets.

Along with being the most well-known tennis championship worldwide, Wimbledon is also famous for being the only Grand Slam event played on grass, the great majority of other venues long having converted to either clay or synthetic hardtops. While the tournament holds a number of different competitions, including men and women’s doubles and even wheelchair double, undoubtedly the highlight of the event is the singles championship, where the tennis awaits in bated breath to see if Swiss-born champion Roger Federer will win an incredible sixth championship in a row, the first time since William Renshaw’s 1886 victory. In all, there are nearly £12,000,000 in prize money stake, and 2008 promises to be the biggest year yet.

The Championships Wimbledon run from June 23 – July 6, 2008. While it is sometimes possible to buy your London sports tickets at the event, advance tickets come highly recommended.
