Madame Tussauds
Madame Tussauds Wax Museum is one of London’s most famous attractions. Including wax replicas of famous people throughout history, from Napoleon to Kylie Minogue, it is situated in the London area of Marylebone.
Originally from France, Marie Tussaud moved to Britain in 1802 to display her waxworks, which then included sculptures of Volitaire and Ben Franklin. Due to the outbreak of the Franco-British War, she was unable to return to France, and decided to stay in Great Britain, eventually settling in London.
The site of the current Madame Tussauds opened in 1884, with 400 sculptures in place. Due to a fire in 1925 and German bombings during WW2 most of these were rendered defunct, but their original moulds survived, meaning they were easily replicated.
Today there are several Madame Tussauds Wax Museums worldwide, but the original in London remains a must-see, and it is easily accessed from our hotel in London, with the nearest tube stop being Baker Street.
The area itself is fairly affluent, with notable celebrities like Noel Gallagher and Derren Brown calling it home. In addition to the Wax Museum, other tourist attractions include the London Planetarium and the Sherlock Holmes Museum (at 221B Baker Street).
